Sunday is the new Friday – A live report 日曜日は新しい金曜日だ ― ライブレビュー
Last Sunday I had the absolute pleasure of going to see “Lucky Kilimanjaro”, one of my favourite Japanese bands. Like I’ve mentioned before, it took me a while to get into Japanese bands properly, but since first hearing the funky basslines, catchy hooks, and danceable beats of this band, I knew I HAD to see them live. I wasn’t disappointed.
先週の日曜日に僕のお気に入り日本のバンドの一つを見に行って幸せした。前の投稿にも述べたように日本のバンドに興味を持つのに結構長い間をかかった。だけど、初めてファンク的なベースラインとキャッチなメロと踊りやすいビートを聴いて以来、このバンドを見に行かなければならないっと分かっていた。全くガッカリしなかった。
They played for over 1 hour and a half and it was a rollercoaster of tunes that I couldn’t help but move to. The band themselves were loving every minute of their performance with the percussionist and guitarist singing every line of every song. I have the impression that if they were at a party, they’d all choose to put a “Lucky Kilimanjaro” tune on. It really made for a party atmosphere.
彼らのジェットコースター演奏は一時間半以上で聴きながら踊らずにはいられなかった。バンドメンバーの皆さんは毎分ずっと喜んでいた。特にギターリストとパーカッショニストは弾きながら各曲の歌詞を歌った。もしもメンバーさんはパーティーに行ったら自分の「ラッキーキリマンジャロ」の曲をかけるのではという印象を持った。そんなに熱情的なバンドマンを見ながらパーティーのような雰囲気になった。
The singer was leading the dancing in the room, afterwards telling the audience that the stage was particularly slippery that night. I thank him for his hard work because it looked effortless. I also can’t finish this review without mentioning the talent of the drummer. Tight beat-holding is essential to a funk band and my god this guy knew what he was doing. I’ve been lucky enough to see many of this generation’s best drummers in action, but I really think he was a talent to behold.
バンドの歌手はライブハウスの踊りを導いて、演奏の後でステージが特に滑りやすいって言ってきた。踊りにくくなったのに自然に踊りを見えた。お疲れ様です。ドラマーの才能も紹介したいと思う。ファンクバンドとして上手にリズムを保つことがとても大切で彼はちゃんと出来た。この時代の有名なバンドのドラマーを見たことあってラッキーと思う。それ経験したことあってもこのバンドのドラマーがとても上手と思った。
I’ll be honest, I recognised a lot of the songs but couldn’t remember the names. But being able to sing “whiskey wo nomihoshite” to the introduction of “Burning Friday Night” was cool. I feel more immersed in the Japanese music scene every day.
正直言って、演奏した曲の沢山を聴いたことあるけど何と言う曲か忘れちゃった。けど、「バーニングフライデーナイト」の最初の歌詞の「ウイスキーを飲み干して」を歌えてカッコイイ気がした。毎日ドンドン日本のミュージックシーンに浸るのを感じる。
Aside from this gig I’d like to mention something about Japanese gigs in general. When I first arrived, I thought the style of Japanese gig goers would be what would make me leave Japan after a year or two. I craved the rough and tumble of English concerts and wasn’t getting any relief from the polite Japanese crowds. But what Japan has instead of the rough and tumble is something even more special now. A lack of fucking mobile phones. In England at every concert I’ve ever been to you have to look past a sea of mobiles to see the stage. But in Japan I’ve noticed that very few people choose to do so. At this concert I literally didn’t see a single mobile phone. Instead, the crowd just shared 2 hours of wonderful music and enjoyed bathing in the atmosphere. I’m starting to think I’d much rather have a quieter gig with no phones than rough and tumble when no one is watching the concert.
このライブ以外、日本のライブの一般なことも述べたいと思う。日本に来た時に、日本のライブの観客のスタイルは早く帰りたくなるようなものだった。イギリスのライブのような観客の荒さを感じたかったけど日本の丁寧なライブは全然違った。日本のライブは観客の荒さの代わりに素晴らしい魅力があると思う。携帯電話が少ないということだ。僕がイギリスで見に行ったことあるライブを考えたら、ステージに向かって「携帯海」を見越さなければならない。けど、日本ではライブを撮りたい人の方が少ないことに気づいた。このライブでは本当に一台の携帯でも見ていなかった。代わりに、 観客は一緒に「雰囲気浴」して素晴らしい音楽を楽しんだ。僕はライブをちゃんと見ていない観客の荒さよりも静かな携帯なしライブの方が好きだと最近思い始めた。
ABSOLUTELY… FUCKING… FANTASTIC!
本当に。。。驚くほど。。。凄かった！
