Sunday is the new Friday – A live report 日曜日は新しい金曜日だ ― ライブレビュー
Last Sunday I had the absolute pleasure of going to see “Lucky Kilimanjaro”, one of my favourite Japanese bands. Like I’ve mentioned before, it took me a while to get into Japanese bands properly, but since first hearing the funky basslines, catchy hooks, and danceable beats of this band, I knew I HAD to see them live. I wasn’t disappointed.
先週の日曜日に僕のお気に入り日本のバンドの一つを見に行って幸せした。前の投稿にも述べたように日本のバンドに興味を持つのに結構長い間をかかった。だけど、初めてファンク的なベースラインとキャッチなメロと踊りやすいビートを聴いて以来、このバンドを見に行かなければならないっと分かっていた。全くガッカリしなかった。
They played for over 1 hour and a half and it was a rollercoaster of tunes that I couldn’t help but move to. The band themselves were loving every minute of their performance with the percussionist and guitarist singing every line of every song. I have the impression that if they were at a party, they’d all choose to put a “Lucky Kilimanjaro” tune on. It really made for a party atmosphere.
彼らのジェットコースター演奏は一時間半以上で聴きながら踊らずにはいられなかった。バンドメンバーの皆さんは毎分ずっと喜んでいた。特にギターリストとパーカッショニストは弾きながら各曲の歌詞を歌った。もしもメンバーさんはパーティーに行ったら自分の「ラッキーキリマンジャロ」の曲をかけるのではという印象を持った。そんなに熱情的なバンドマンを見ながらパーティーのような雰囲気になった。
The singer was leading the dancing in the room, afterwards telling the audience that the stage was particularly slippery that night. I thank him for his hard work because it looked effortless. I also can’t finish this review without mentioning the talent of the drummer. Tight beat-holding is essential to a funk band and my god this guy knew what he was doing. I’ve been lucky enough to see many of this generation’s best drummers in action, but I really think he was a talent to behold.
バンドの歌手はライブハウスの踊りを導いて、演奏の後でステージが特に滑りやすいって言ってきた。踊りにくくなったのに自然に踊りを見えた。お疲れ様です。ドラマーの才能も紹介したいと思う。ファンクバンドとして上手にリズムを保つことがとても大切で彼はちゃんと出来た。この時代の有名なバンドのドラマーを見たことあってラッキーと思う。それ経験したことあってもこのバンドのドラマーがとても上手と思った。
I’ll be honest, I recognised a lot of the songs but couldn’t remember the names. But being able to sing “whiskey wo nomihoshite” to the introduction of “Burning Friday Night” was cool. I feel more immersed in the Japanese music scene every day.
正直言って、演奏した曲の沢山を聴いたことあるけど何と言う曲か忘れちゃった。けど、「バーニングフライデーナイト」の最初の歌詞の「ウイスキーを飲み干して」を歌えてカッコイイ気がした。毎日ドンドン日本のミュージックシーンに浸るのを感じる。
Aside from this gig I’d like to mention something about Japanese gigs in general. When I first arrived, I thought the style of Japanese gig goers would be what would make me leave Japan after a year or two. I craved the rough and tumble of English concerts and wasn’t getting any relief from the polite Japanese crowds. But what Japan has instead of the rough and tumble is something even more special now. A lack of fucking mobile phones. In England at every concert I’ve ever been to you have to look past a sea of mobiles to see the stage. But in Japan I’ve noticed that very few people choose to do so. At this concert I literally didn’t see a single mobile phone. Instead, the crowd just shared 2 hours of wonderful music and enjoyed bathing in the atmosphere. I’m starting to think I’d much rather have a quieter gig with no phones than rough and tumble when no one is watching the concert.
このライブ以外、日本のライブの一般なことも述べたいと思う。日本に来た時に、日本のライブの観客のスタイルは早く帰りたくなるようなものだった。イギリスのライブのような観客の荒さを感じたかったけど日本の丁寧なライブは全然違った。日本のライブは観客の荒さの代わりに素晴らしい魅力があると思う。携帯電話が少ないということだ。僕がイギリスで見に行ったことあるライブを考えたら、ステージに向かって「携帯海」を見越さなければならない。けど、日本ではライブを撮りたい人の方が少ないことに気づいた。このライブでは本当に一台の携帯でも見ていなかった。代わりに、 観客は一緒に「雰囲気浴」して素晴らしい音楽を楽しんだ。僕はライブをちゃんと見ていない観客の荒さよりも静かな携帯なしライブの方が好きだと最近思い始めた。

I don't have a huge amount of time this week to write an actual article, so I'll put a couple of translations of a band I'm off to see in Fukuoka this week. The first up is "Burning Friday Night". The second is "Paradise". Enjoy!

They may be called "Mr Children" but this song is definitely made for drunken singalongs! 彼らは「ミスターチルドレン」というのにこの曲は酔っ払たら歌うのが最高だ
I was at karaoke with a group of friends when I first heard the chorus of this song. The way the group belted out “mou ikkai” (”One more time”) was like how English people grab their best mate and shout “So sally can wait” if they catch any wind of “Don’t look back in anger” coming on the pub radio. It’s an anthem. From the moment I heard it I knew next time I went to karaoke I would channel my inner Tanaka-san and sing it like the best of them. I’m happy to say I managed it!
友達のグループと一緒にカラオケに行ってこの曲を初めて聴いた。もしもイギリス人はパブラジオが「ドント・ルック・バック・イン・アンガー」というオアシス曲を放送されることに気づいたら、ベストフレンドを抱きながら熱情的に「ソー・サリー・キャン・ウェート」を歌うように、そのグループは「もう一回」を歌った。大作だと思う。初めて聴いた瞬間から、僕の内なる「田中さん」をチャネルして次のカラオケチャンスに上手に歌えることにした。成功だったって言えて嬉しい。
In my opinion, Japanese and English are better at expressing different emotions. Japanese is a more useful tool for expressing sorrow and longing, whilst English is better at expressing lust and passion. It’s an interesting aspect of language learning that fascinates me. This song’s lyrics (translated below) are expressing what Japanese does best, longing for another chance and bathing in that feeling.
僕の意見で、感情を伝えるのを日本語と英語の得手不得手が違う。日本語は人恋しさとか哀れの方が伝える、一方で英語は熱情とか欲望の方が伝えると思う。僕は言語の面白い側面でそれに魅了されている。
This song is an all-out banger. It ebbs and flows between sections that are better singalongs than the last until you climax with the “mou ikkai”. Being with a Japanese friend, shouting them hallowed words has been one of my favourite memories (albeit a hazy one due to booze) of my time in Japan so far. Give it a go!

Not my usual taste 僕の基本的な聴くスタイルと違った曲
I came across this tune through the God-like app, Spotify. It always delivers new bands to me that I wouldn’t have found for myself. This song was released in 2020 for the anime “Keep your hands off Eizouken!”. I haven’t seen it yet, but it seems to be about a group of High Schoolers that have decided to make an anime via their club “Eizouken”. I can’t say I love watching anime, I get tired of the style very fast, but I might give this one a go.
Spotifyという神アプリでこの曲を見つけた。いつもいつもSpotifyは自分で見つけられない新しいバンドを提供する。この曲は「映像研には手を出すな！」というアニメ主題歌(shudaika)で２０２０年に公開された。そのアニメを見たことないけど話は高校生の集団が「映像研」という部活でアニメを作ることを決めたということだ。僕はアニメを見ることが大好きなタイプと言えず、アニメのスタイルにすぐ飽きるけどそのアニメを見てみたい。
Chelmico formed in 2014 in a McDonalds in Tokyo. Hardly a beautiful setting to meet but nevertheless I’m glad they met! They are a rap duo that initially hit it off due to their love of “Rip Slyme”. One of the two women took a break from the band earlier this year due to pregnancy and marriage, but it seems they’re performing in Tokyo in November, so I guess the break is over.
「Chelmico」というグループは２０１４年にマックで結成された。綺麗な場所じゃないけどそれにもかかわらず二人が出会ったのを良かったと思う。ラップデュオの二人は「Rip Slyme」が好きで最初から意気投合した。一人のメンバーは結婚して妊娠してからバンドから一時的抜けたけど11月に東京でライブをするつもりだそうで、活動を再開するみたいだ。
As for the song itself, I translated the lyrics and I have to say it seems like a load of nonsense. It’s probably more based on sounding cool rather than carrying real meaning. Or maybe I need to watch the anime to understand it properly. I enjoy their flow and the guitar backing (which reminds me of "Ain't no rest for the wicked" by "Cage the Elephant"). I’m afraid I’m not hugely into rap to give you a full analysis of their rap style, but it seems to be a stage above other cringy Japanese rappers I’ve heard in the past.
曲について言えば、歌詞を訳しても意味がないと思う。多分意味がいいわけではなく言葉のひびきだけがいいかなと思う。そうはいっても、アニメを見るこそ歌詞の意味が分かるかもしれない。歌い方の流れとか、「Cage the elephant」の「Ain't no rest for the wicked」を思い出せたギターバッキングを楽しんでいる。残念ながらラップの大ファンじゃないので詳しく分析ができないけど、普通の日本人のラッパーを超えていると思う。

Once again thanks to Kenji Komatsu for his help with the Japanese edit. Things I learned this time included:
- "God-like app" doesn't required 「のような」, it can just be metaphoric.
- Instead of 「早く飽きる」, it should be 「すぐ飽きる」.
- I said 「そのアニメを見てみるかもしれない」but he told me that this sounds like somebody else will maybe try to watch the anime. For a personal use it should be 「見てみたい」.
- For the career break one of the members took from the band, it's better to use 「一時的にぬけ」than 「休憩」.
- Finishing a sentence with just 「みたい」sounds feminine so adding 「みたいだ」is better.
- To say "It's just the sound of the words" you would say 「言葉のひびき」in Japanese.
WHAT A GROOVE! うわっ、凄くいいグルーヴ！
I’m lucky enough to have tickets to go and see Glim Spanky in November with a friend. They’ve been on my ‘to see live’ list for a while now and after watching an online concert of theirs that desire only intensified. Their music harks back to 60’s/70’s rock whilst maintaining a fresh feel. Their vocalist, Remi Matsuo, has an incredible voice that Janis Joplin would surely be proud of. To say they’re unique for Japanese music would be an understatement and I can’t recommend them enough.
僕はラッキーだ。11月に友達と一緒に「Glim Spanky」のライブを見に行くつもりだ。二年間で「自分の見に行きたいライブ」リストの一つのバンドだ。コロナ時代にオンラインライブを見て、そして見に行たい気持ちが深まった。彼らの曲は新しいようで６０代・７０代のロックを思い越こさせる。歌手・松尾レミの素晴らしい声は「ジャニス・ジョプリン」を連想させる。
I’ve been listening to them loads recently and noticed they had a new song out, “Jyounetsu” (“Passion” in English). From the first listen I was blown away. It has a groove that I can’t help but move to and the rhythm of the singing is so perfect it feels like I’m hearing puzzle pieces fall into place. It reminds me of “Hey Gringo” by “Kaleo” which I’ve also been addicted to recently. I’m the type of person that’ll listen to a song on repeat if I love it enough and it’s a good sign that I listened back-to-back maybe 6 times last night! The guitar lines, the horns, the singing, my god I love it all.
最近沢山聴いて、そして「情熱」という新しい曲が公開されたのを気づいた。初めて聴いて感心した。この曲はグルーヴに揺れずにはいられなくて、パズルのピースを位置にはめるような完璧な歌い方に満足する。思い出させるのは最近ハマっている「Kaleo」の「Hey Gringo」だ。僕は曲が好きなら連続に何回も聴けるタイプだから、昨日の夜に連続に6回聴いたのはいい兆候だ。素晴らしいギターメロ、ホーンズ、歌い方、驚く程好きだ。

As always I have to thank Kenji Komatsu for his help with my Japanese. Things I learned from his edit included:
- Horns are referred to as ホーンズ in Japanese and not 吹奏.
- "Puzzle pieces falling into place" is 「パズルのピースを位置にはめる」and doesn't make use of "falling" like in English.
- 「思い起こさせる」is like "makes you think".
- I made a clunky sentence using 「最近の聴きやめられない」but this is better as 「最近ハマっている」.
- In the lyrics one bit says 「思い出に笑われて」which I wrongly translated to "Now I laught at the memories" but actually it refers to the memories laughing at the speaker (poetic language is difficult!).
Old but gold: Kirinji – Aliens 古いのにまだいい曲：キリンジ ― エイリアンズ
This song was released in the year 2000, so it’s fair to say 21 years on, that it’s a bit of an oldie now. I feel like I’m a bit late to the party by just discovering this tune, but I love it. It instantly transports me to a sleepless night, roaming the streets of a distant city. And I was pleasantly surprised that when I translated the lyrics, my image of the song kind of fit!
この曲は２０００年に公開したから今まで21年間が経ったので「オールディー」と呼んでいいでしょう。僕はこの曲を発見したばかりのが遅いかもしれないけどこの曲が大好きだよ。聴きながら眠れない夜に遠く都会に歩き回っているシーンに瞬時に移動させている。歌詞を訳した時に僕のイメージが大体当ててよかった。
Kirinji formed in 1996 by the brothers Yasayuki and Takaki Horigome. In 2013 their era as musical brothers ended as Yasayuki decided to leave the band. Their distinctive style came to be known as “Kirinji Style”. I’ve loved their songs for quite a while but had never heard “Aliens” before searching their top 10 best songs on Spotify. Delving into the different eras of their music has really made me appreciate how genius they are.
１９９６年泰行さんと高樹さんの実兄弟は「キリンジ」を結成した。２０１３年泰行さんは脱退することにしたせいでは音楽の兄弟期間が終わった。彼らの特徴なスタイルが「キリンジスタイル」と言われてた。長い間にキリンジの曲が好きだったのにSpotifyという音楽アップリのキリンジトップテンでこの歌を見つけた前に「エイリアンズ」を聴いたことがなかった。キリンジの色んな時代の曲を探して聴いてこのアーティストの天才が分かった。
“Aliens” is a expertly crafted earworm that both makes you feel a sense of love and loneliness simultaneously. The song gently ebbs and flows you into a wonderfully relaxed chorus. The gentleness of the lyrics to compare a pair of lovers to aliens is impactful yet soft. I’m glad I spent the time to translate the lyrics and enhance my experience of this song. I love living in Japan, I really do, but it’s taken me a while to get used to Japanese popular music. Japan is slow to change to anything and music is no different. I’m often left thinking many artists are stuck with a style more akin to 2001 than 2021. But this guy is different. A young, inspiring, innovative artist. What a breath of fresh air!
本当に日本に住むのが大好きだ、けど日本で流行っている音楽に慣れるのが結構時間が掛かった。日本は基本的に変化のが遅いと思って音楽も遅く進むと思う。よく、沢山の日本のアーティストの雰囲気が２０２１年に合わなくて、２００１年の方が合う。そうはいっても、この人は違うと思う。若く斬新な霊感を与える人だ。聞ければスッキリする感じだ。
